Several months ago, Allie and I decided to give Dawson’s Creek a go.
We had watched Felicity more than once (for the most part), and continue to be big fans of the show (and it’s heavyweight pair of soundtracks). The WB had historically done pretty well with series. Felicity, Gilmore Girls (Allie REALLY loved that one, while I thought it was pretty decent- at least until the last year or so.), and so we queued it in Netflix. We cruised through all of the seasons (were there like 5 or 6?- Can’t remember anymore). What I really liked about the show (besides the very listen-able soundtrack) was Pacey’s character. While the series was based on Dawson (what was that kid’s name again? Maybe nobody knows since he dropped off all radars since the show) and ended up taking a turn to focus on Katie Holmes’ character (which really was pretty good)- but Joshua Jackson truly made a great component of the show. His troubled-teen character complete with emotional & sensitive moments was a great add to the cast. By FAR my favorite piece of the puzzle.
So anyway, since we saw that show, I have been somewhat of a fan of JJ. Then a few months ago, I had read that he was going to be making a showing on what had become a horrible show (Grey’s Anatomy). Even though I was completely OVER that waste of Thursday programming, I had committed (while somewhat excited, I admit) to actually watching his episodes once they aired. Due to the writers’ strike, they were never shot.
So then I see that he is going to be in a new fall series on Fox titled “The Fringe”. Today I see that the pilot is due to show mid-September sometime. But I was able to find it and watch the whole thing tonight. It is going to be a 2 hour pilot- which makes it like an hour & 20 without commercials. Just finished the thing about 10 minutes ago. Can I just say that the fact that JJ Abrams is producing this thing is a good start. So is the fact that I REALLY liked the show. JJ managed to get a $10 M budget just for the pilot. Is that as crazy as I think it is? Even with the big plane crash on the LOST pilot, I don’t think that they spent half that much. Either way, the studios are sure banking on JJ to deliver the goods. But hey- he did Felicity, Alias, Lost, and now this one. He’s got a great record so far. As is JJ’s trademark, he definitely likes to bring characters from one show to another. He did it with Megan from Felicity showing up on Alias, the short guy that hung out with Megan’s character showed up in Alias, Jennifer Garner started as Noel’s girlfriend in Felicity. Shawn from Felicity ended up on Alias, and then again as the pilot IN the pilot of Lost. Now Lance Reddick from Lost is showing up as a key player in this one. Very cool.
The $10M definitely did not go waste on this one. I don’t have any doubts that this one will stick around. It’s kinda like I just watched a really cool movie, but it’s going to have a sequel every week. Don’t know how they are going to do that. It has a kind of X-Files type theme going on, but it’s definitely not the same thing. You’ll see. And seriously, you’re going to love this show.
Here is more about it that I just found tonight.
