52 Movies in 52 Weeks. Week One: Revolution Road

I decided to jump on the bandwagon that Jeremy started. Thought it would be a fun reason to see movies that I might not otherwise get around to seeing.
This first film probably isn’t one of those, though. This has more to do with being prepped for the Oscar party coming up.

This film wasn’t entirely surprising to me, as the trailers get a pretty fair expectation as to the story. I might say that (outside of Body of Lies) it may be my favorite DeCaprio performance. I found it to be somewhat of a departure from the typical Leonardo character, as he is usually very likable and sometimes eccentric (The Aviator).

I found both his and Winslet’s characters to be entirely believable and realistic. The story is one that I think most people will be able to relate to, at least on some level. I also enjoyed the fact that the story was set in the late 40’s/early 50’s, as it adds a great deal to the story and its characters. Almost as if it provided some insight and depth to the story. Sam Mendes did a great job directing this movie, and it may even land this project into my top 5 films of the year.

But as I mentioned before- while I really liked it, I can see how it may not appeal to many because of its largely depressed undertones. A-

I absolutely loved Revolutionary Road. I’m totally with you when you say that it was realistic. One person who I know saw it didn’t like it, saying “It was just a two hour argument.” To me, that’s what made it great. I never once felt like I was watching two actors, but rather a real couple whose marriage was disintegrating.

It’s not a happy movie, and people might not warm up to the characters or actually like them, but you’re not supposed to. You’re supposed to watch, shake your head, and grieve. It was the best film I saw in 2008.
